This is my capstone project for my M.S. in Media Innovation and Data Communication. With the goal of gaining insights into the intricate connection between crime rates and median household income, my project focuses on studying the city of Boston from 2015 to 2022. By examining this specific timeframe, I aim to uncover patterns and trends that shed light on the potential impact of socioeconomic factors on crime.
-
To conduct this research, I acquired a comprehensive dataset from Analyze Boston, a platform that provides access to various data sets related to the city of Boston. This dataset includes detailed information on crime incidents as well as corresponding median household income figures. With this valuable resource, I embarked on an extensive analysis to identify correlations, uncover potential causal relationships, and generate meaningful insights.
-
Employing advanced data analysis techniques and visualization tools, I delved deep into the dataset to extract relevant information and uncover underlying patterns. I employed statistical methods to examine the relationship between crime rates and median household income over the selected period. This involved aggregating and organizing the data, performing calculations, and generating visual representations such as charts, graphs, and maps.

VoteChat is a virtual chatbot that provides first-time voters with information on fundamental voting rights and requirements while keeping up-to-date with changing laws.
-
As part of the work, I designed the chatbot configuration and deployed a content maintenance workflow API for its server.
-
I synthesized information on relevant state laws, registration deadlines, ID card requirements, mail-in voting, and early voting procedures.
-
To make the information accessible to users, I translated legal terms into conversational language and formatted messages with an encouraging tone.

Paul Robinson was released from prison in June 2022 after serving 52 years, and he celebrated his first "free" birthday in December of the same year. While Paul's charges are pending, and he is not yet an exoneree, his story highlights the flaws and injustices in the criminal justice system.
-
To share his story, my colleague and I interviewed Paul, and I used multimedia elements and coding to create a scrolltelling news piece. The piece was written for the New England Innocence Project, which works to exonerate wrongfully convicted individuals and advocate for criminal justice reform.

My colleagues and I collaborated on an investigative story examining the relationship between crime and Airbnb in Boston. The piece "Airbnb's Impact on Crime: Minimal, but Potential for Gentrification and Increased Property Values" explores how short-term rentals through Airbnb affect crime rates and housing prices in Boston neighborhoods.
-
To conduct our research, we began with a study conducted by researchers at Northeastern University and obtained a trustworthy dataset from Analyze Boston. Using the 12 police districts as a reference, we identified and analyzed crime data in neighborhoods across the city.
-
We visualized the data to tell a compelling, data-driven story about the effects of Airbnb on crime and housing in Boston. The piece aims to inform the public and encourage policymakers to consider the potential impacts of short-term rentals on local communities.
